Harmful shoes and orthotics

Foot Health - Part 1

Dear Friend,

Plantar fasciitis, bunions, achilles tendonitis…

The list of common foot issues is vast and common fixes are replacing old shoes and adding custom orthotics. Surgery is recommended in extreme cases.

The Problem: Typical shoes and custom orthotics make the foot worse. Bunion surgery, don’t even think about.

The cause of the foot issues is with changes in structure and strength. This change occurs over time with use of poorly fitting shoes. Most shoes on the market from big brands do not allow for a proper fit and high-heels in particular put the foot in a compromised position.

Learnings from years of struggling with plantar fasciitis

I suffered from plantar fasciitis in my 20s and 30s. A combination of flat feet and years of fitness. At the time I was running regularly. I went through different shoes, orthotics, even slept in a brace to keep my foot in a neutral position.

In the end, training in barefoot shoes was the fix. This did not come easy, the radically different position of my foot without a thick sole caused minor setbacks along the way. Looking back, I pushed things too fast in the barefoot shoes, but now the feet are stronger than ever.

With the advancements in science and technology, I believe we are just scratching the surface in foot health.

Next time we will discuss the specific lifestyle interventions for foot health.

At BodyTimeMD, we have been doing a deep dive into foot health for the past 6 months and are now educating our clients to incorporate important lifestyle changes. Hope this provides some insight, let’s talk if you are interested in finding out more about your body.

Conquered the Berry Picker hike the day before, this is going up the Gondola to mountain bike down. Criz is a bit more than anxious, but she crushed it. Annual HasegawaPartyof5 trip - Only 4 more summers left: Kaya starting high school in the fall, Nina starting middle school, and Kenzo starting 3rd grade.
