Meditation Tips

Mental Health - Part 2

Dear Friend,

Productivity and efficiency are skills we value at BodyTimeMD and what many of our clients appreciate when working with us.

Meditation: Be still and be present

Sounds contradictory to productivity, but if done properly it can clear the mind and optimize one for efficient performance.

What if we could marry productivity and stillness?

  • Comfort with boredom

  • Future state meditation

Learning to be comfortable with discomfort is the basis of hormesis, meaning what does not kill us makes us stronger. One discomfort often forgotten is boredom. Especially important these days with all the devices at our disposal designed to capture our attention.

Early in my emergency medicine career, I had a regular 1.5 hour commute and found this time to be peaceful and productive. Initially filled with podcasts and phone calls to make use of the time, it naturally evolved to periods of forced boredom to let the mind wander.

This forced boredom ironically became a highly productive period, allowing me to solve problems I didn’t know existed.

Once my schedule changed and my commute needs decreased, I noticed I missed this commute time. I’ve seen this from individuals who work in an office and remote work options removed their commute. A simple solution is a virtual commute time: Sit on the couch for 15 minutes in place of a commute.

Egoscue method with meditation:

This year I’ve been exploring the Egoscue method of symmetrical body strengthening. This requires adhering to a daily routine and some of the poses require laying still up to 10 minutes, which allows the tension in the body to relax. For these extended poses, I listen to future self meditation recordings by Joe Dispenza.

I know the purists from the meditation field will say I am not truly being still and present, however, this allows me to check my need for productivity while being still.

At BodyTimeMD, we care about body and mind while finding a practice pattern that is tailored for the individual. Hope this provides some insight, let’s talk if you are interested in finding out more about your body.
