Peak at 32... or Never

Dear Friend,

A 2025 MRI study in Nature Communications mapped structural phases of the brain and labeled ages 9–32 as a prolonged developmental window — a dynamic “adolescence” marked by increasing efficiency and integration. Around 32, there’s a turning point. After that, efficiency gradually declines.

Thirty-two.

Arthur Brooks describes something similar in From Strength to Strength: “fluid intelligence” — raw processing speed — peaks in the early 30s. But “crystallized intelligence” — wisdom and integration — keeps rising.

Do we have to peak?

At 46, building and scaling BodyTime, my role is heavier than ever — investors, systems, recruiting, and leadership. The pressure is real. And the question surfaced:

Am I past my cognitive prime for this?

Maybe the structural shift isn’t the problem. Maybe stability is.

That 9–32 window is volatile — risk, identity, career pivots, and possibly starting families. After 33, many people settle. Less change. Less stretch.

Is the brain declining or are we just choosing comfort?

For our kids, we’re encouraging them to prolong that early-30s energy — stay dynamic, build, take smart risks, and keep learning.

For Crizen and me, we teach by doing. I’m training to preserve fluid intelligence AND compound crystallized intelligence.

The role will evolve. The intention won’t.

Peak at 32, or peak when you stop growing?

We’re currently doing a friends and family capital raise, message me if interested in learning more.

At BodyTime, our focus is turning health knowledge into action. Here are a few ways to start:

Track season is here for Nina. Crizen and I advised her to do the 400 or 800 which is inline with her strengths. In classic Nina fashion, she made the discus team. She’s very comfortable with uncomfortable.

Thanks,

Mike
