What do I need? vs What is needed of me?

Mental Health - Part 1

Dear Friend,

It’s already been 5 years since I started my longevity journey when I came to realize the most valuable commodities are our bodies and time.

It’s what we do with this that matters. Over the years, I’ve learned that relationships are my emotional fuel and the memories made with those people are what will last after I am gone.

A year of work for the Hasegawa family:

This year has been a transformational year for the Hasegawa family. What started as business coaching for me and the BodyTimeMD team has now spread into coaching for the entire family.

Crizen and I have been doing individual work ourselves, which has translated into being better partners, parents, family members, and friends.

Most recently my family learned about Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life by Marshall Rosenberg, PhD. By putting this into practice, we have stumbled on some tremendous breakthroughs.

If you have never heard of nonviolent communication (NVC), this book is worth the read, but more importantly it’s worth a try. We have learned to communicate with empathy and share our emotions, while identifying our needs. I was skeptical on the amount of time and retraining it would take to communicate in this manner, but found it to be relatively smooth.

Birthday Gift:

I turned 45 on October 2 and it was a typical birthday: Kids nearly forgot my birthday and I had my annual eye exam. I like getting my eyes checked on schedule because it’s a measurable change each year.

This year was different (not because of my eyes).

Learning to communicate my needs lead to a larger question: What are my needs? I realized I’ve never asked myself this question.

Wolf:

As a teenager, I was the man with the plan, sometimes called “The Wolf” from the movie Pulp Fiction (The new movie Wolfs is also worth the watch). Looking back I assumed this role in my family life and professional life, including years in business consulting and now in medicine. I’ve now realized that “the wolf” was what was needed of me and my presumed purpose.

This year, my birthday was spent thinking about “What I need”. This is still a work in progress and I’m starting to realize it may not be a discrete answerable question since it lies somewhere between my conscious/subconscious space. But a week of thinking about it has showed me it’s worth the mental journey.

If you have not posed this question to yourself, I challenge you to do so and see where the rabbit holes take you.

At BodyTimeMD, we spend so much time and effort optimizing our health, but what good is it if we do not put the same effort into our mental health and relationships. Let’s talk if you are interested in finding out more about your body.
