Why health?

Dear Friend,

Happy Mother’s Day

This past weekend we celebrated the moms who shape our lives—not just their words, but through their daily actions.

I am fortunate to be surrounded by three amazing moms: My mom, Crizen, and Crizen’s mom.

It’s a powerful reminder: Kids are always watching

The truth hits even harder as a parent.

Start with Why

In health we often focus on the what and how:

  • What should I eat?

  • How much and how often?

  • Is HIIT better than Zone 2?

  • Cardio vs strength training?

But for me, it all starts with why.

And my why is simple: My kids.

The Shift

I’ve always cared about personal growth, but the real shift happened when Crizen and I had Kaya.

Suddenly, it was clear:

Our kids absorb everything—not just what we say, but how we live.

  • They watch us eat

  • They see if we move

  • They learn balance, discipline, and mindset—by our example

That made them the most powerful accountability partners we could ever have.

Modeling vs Telling

We want to give them the best shot at a fulfilling life. That means, creating a lifestyle they can absorb as normal:

  • Enjoy the occasional treat—knowing it’s a treat

  • Move daily, not for punishment, but for energy and joy

  • Eat whole foods more often than not

  • Prioritize sleep, rest, and connection

  • Be fearless in striving for more and push the limits, while appreciating what we already have

Not perfect. But intentional.

Looking Ahead

Now we’re three years from Kaya heading off to college. She’s entering a phase of full autonomy—and we’re talking a lot about choices.

For Example: New research shows that gaining weight can cause an “obesity memory” in fat cells—making it harder to lose weight and keep it off later in life. The “freshman fifteen” may affect much more than just college.

Now and Next

  • With our kids still under our roof, I ask: What can we model now to set them up later?

  • As they step into independence: What kind of support can we offer once they’re out on their own…shameless plug for BodyTime

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms showing up every day. Your actions matter more than you know.

Let’s raise our kids who see health not as a chore—but as a gift.

Walking Lady Bird lake with the kids, I usually do a 45lb Ruck. Nina “beast mode” wanted a shot at it, over half her body weight. A high-five moment for Crizen and me when we achieve these wins.

Thanks,

Mike
